Challenge
The US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) needed a system for researchers to prepare a financial budget for individual research plans. The institute was using an ad-hoc system consisting of excel spreadsheets.
Solution
A custom ASP.Net web based system with an SQL Server backend was developed. USAMRIID had many unique requirements that necessitated a custom solution.
Success was ensured by using iterative design and development. Frequent requirement gathering, honest timelines, and feature prioritization made certain that USAMRIID's goals were being met. Thorough testing and customer verification affirmed that the system worked as intended.
Benefits/Outcome
- Researchers can now be confident that the numbers they are using for their proposed budgets are accurate and the underlying assumptions as well as surcharges have been approved by the organization
- Management can review and approve research proposals easier due to increased availability of the budget information
- Scalable solution that can grow with the institute
- Upgrades can be implemented easily
- Reports across multiple budgets are possible
- Supply ordering can be forecasted for a given year
- Interface with other systems can be accomplished via database or web-centric interfaces
