Challenge
University Health System (UHS) wanted to remain a leader in healthcare systems. An improvement effort was requested within UHS to evaluate its operational costs against industry leaders and competition. UHS sought to improve its management, business, and patient care by measuring its products, services, costs, and practices to direct and indirect competition.
Solution
UHS contacted Romanyk Consulting Corp. (RCC) to perform a benchmarking analysis to achieve "Best in Class" performance. Our analysis looked to benefit patient/customer requirements, establish goals while broadening views of external conditions, determine measures of productivity, solidify competitive position, and strive to achieve "Best Practices" outside the healthcare industry. The benchmarking of "Best in Class" performance analysis offers solutions by assigning performance indicators, instituting required monitoring/reporting, and enforcing continuous improvement efforts. Our unique approach focused on high impact operational areas of opportunity key to UHS.
Benefits/Outcome
RCC prepared an operational dashboard that compared UHS to a sample of other teaching hospital departments. This departmental benchmarking dashboard allowed UHS to visually understand operational costs and areas of improvement. Furthermore, it allowed understanding of how UHS measured against industry competition. UHS has proceeded in improvement efforts by making changes to departmental layouts, equipment, processes, and service levels. Changes have allowed UHS to proceed offering quality care as well as remain a leader in healthcare performance. |
