Tampa Polytrauma/SCI Project Book

Department of Veterans Affairs

VISN 8, James A Haley Veterans’ Hospital

Tampa, FL

Romanyk Consulting Corporation (RCC) provided architectural and engineering services for a Project Book to confirm and validate the scope to build 100 single-patient bedrooms at the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Center and to relocate 10 Polytrauma Transitional Rehab Program (PTRP) beds with practice living skills areas.

The RCC team collected pre-design information, performed analysis, and identified project risks in order to mitigate potential design and constructions issues. RCC also established a design to budget for a new Capital Asset project at the James A Haley Veterans’ Hospital located in Tampa, FL.

RCC evaluated two major options:

  • Option 1—construction 48 new SCI beds, renovation of 42 SCI beds, and the construction and relocation of 10 PTRP beds with practice living skills areas above the SCI F-Wing.

  • Option 2—the temporary relocation of existing SCI patients, a phased demolition and construction of building wings, and the relocation of 10 PTRP beds with practice living skills areas into the newly built space.

Concurrent with the SCI-PTRP analysis, RCC also evaluated and analyzed the existing VAMC parking structure in order to determine and recommend an expansion solution to increase parking on the campus by 600 spaces. RCC considered three options: vertical expansion, horizontal expansion and new construction in place of five existing trailers located on the south side of the campus.
